Freedom「自由, Jiyū?」 is the twenty-second episode of Oshi no Ko anime adaptation.
Synopsis[]
Aqua and Kana go shopping before their trip to Miyazaki. Kana is elated to be escorted so smartly, but... Meanwhile, Aqua, who has lost his goal of finding his father, confides in Akane that...[1]
Summary[]
Aqua agrees to go to Miyazaki, which excites Kana and she proposes to help him get a suitcase for the trip. He accepts her offer and plans a meet-up with her the next day. At home, Kana cannot make up her mind on what to wear for the occasion. Despite giving herself two hours to prepare, she ends up running late after trying on different outfits. As she makes her way to Shinjuku, she can only imagine the snarky remarks Aqua would say to her but suddenly gets a message from him telling her that he is waiting at a cafe nearby.
Kana is shocked with Aqua's talent in escorting.
In the cafe, Kana is surprised that Aqua is acting kind and thoughtful to her, ordering a warm drink for her before she arrived and paying for the bill. During the shopping date, Aqua continues to surprise Kana by picking a white suitcase that is the same color as her glow stick, carrying her bag for her, and reserving a dinner at a busy restaurant. Kana realizes that Aqua has planned everything out and questions how he is so good at being an escort. Aqua explains that it is because he had an upbringing in a talent agency while hiding the fact that he has decades of experience from his past life under his belt. Aqua adds that he planned the day to make Kana enjoy herself, which makes her swoon.
Kana assumes Aqua will take her somewhere to spend the night.
Kana is quickly reminded of Aqua's relationship with Akane and asks what his plan is with her. Believing that it is now okay for him to be in a relationship, Aqua says he wants to give Akane a clear answer. In response, Kana tells him that humans are free to love. Aqua is surprised to hear her say that as an idol, but she reminds him that they are talking about him, eliciting a smile from Aqua that surprises Kana. After dinner, Aqua calls a taxi but Kana gets the wrong idea, believing that he is taking her to a hotel at Kabukicho for the night, and her flushed reaction amuses Aqua. However, to Kana's astonishment, she is simply sent home. Although disappointed, Kana is happy about how the date went, but when she is once again reminded of Akane, she wonders what Aqua will do.
Later, Aqua goes on a date with Akane and he begins thinking about their future. Since his revenge is over, he no longer needs to keep Akane around and believes that she should not be held down by him either. Akane starts discussing his trip to Miyazaki and expresses envy as she doesn't get to travel much, at least not with people their age. On the spot, Aqua asks her to come along, as he wants to discuss something with her during this trip. Akane quickly deduces that Aqua is considering breaking up with him and suggests they discuss it now.
Akane expresses her feelings to Aqua.
The two go on a walk, where Akane reminisces their time together since the end of LoveforReal. Aqua addresses the fact that their relationship was unnatural to begin with and how he does not want to tie her down. Akane acknowledges his points and says she was always aware that he kept her around because she was useful somehow, so she asks if she is no longer useful to him and if she has helped him or not. She continues to reflect that she always knew he was sly, but as they arrive at the bridge where he saved her, she hugs him, stating he is also kind for he saved her without any malicious motive. And so, she admits that she did not hate when he kissed her and is not against kissing or having sex with him.
Surprised by her statement, Aqua hesitantly attempts to brush off Akane with some excuses, which upsets her and makes her demand the truth from him, even suggesting that he finds their relationship strange due to the lack of kissing or sex. Aqua does not deny the accusation but turns the questioning around by asking if Akane has any romantic feelings for him. Akane quickly responds that she does but gives a more shaky response. Akane explains that she only feels that way because Aqua is her first boyfriend and therefore does not understand what kind of relationship they have. However, she does want to help him, reminding him that he joined the industry to kill someone and she wants to share the burden with him.
Akane realizes the truth about Aqua's father.
Aqua explains that he was looking for the man responsible for his mother's death, his father. He became an actor, as he deduced that he was in the entertainment industry. He spent a fortune on DNA tests and eventually found a half-brother. However, it turns out that his father was dead, so it is over and he is free to do whatever he wants. Akane is stunned by Aqua's revelation before quickly making up an excuse and heading home. As she reflects on what Aqua has said, she realizes that a part of him always wanted his revenge to end, which is why he failed to notice a simple loophole in his logic and that his true biological father is not who he believed him to be. However, if he were to notice, he would surely dive back into his revenge, leaving Akane to ponder what to do.
Aqua and Ruby's father visits Ai's grave.
Meanwhile, Ruby visits Ai's grave, telling her about the upcoming trip to Miyazaki as well as Aqua's positive change in behavior. As she leaves, she passes by a man in sunglasses who approaches Ai's grave and praises Ruby's beauty, saying that it is no surprise since she is their daughter.

- This episode adapts the chapters in a different order, with Aqua going shopping with Kana first and having a date with Akane later.
- The coffeehouse that Aqua and Kana meet up serve coffee in regular cups instead of disposable cups and they take their time to finish their drink rather than leaving with the drinks in their hand.
- The events shown after Kana reaches home are anime-original.
- The sequence where Aqua explains the situation with his parents and Akane processing the explanation are anime-original.
